Don’t Run Ads Until You’ve Done This
You spent four thousand dollars on ads last quarter and you can't point to one job that came from them.
The enquiries are coming in, they’re just the wrong ones. Tyre-kickers, price-shoppers, people wanting something you don’t really do. So the instinct kicks in: get in front of more people, widen the net, push for volume. And the wider you cast, the more of the same mismatch comes back.
A bigger audience rarely fixes this. A sharper aim does. Picture a crowded, noisy room. Shout hey everyone and nobody turns. Say one person’s name and their head snaps round. A message broad enough to suit anyone lands as background noise to everyone, and the people who respond are mostly the price-shoppers, because nothing filtered them out.
When you can describe the exact person you want to work with, their day, their worries, what a good outcome looks like for them, your marketing starts to sound like it was written for someone real. And the right people can tell. A smaller audience who feel deeply understood will out-work a huge one who feel vaguely addressed, every time.
It feels risky to get specific, like you’re closing doors. In practice the opposite happens. When one person reads your marketing and thinks that’s me, these are the people who get it, they arrive already half-sold and easy to work with. Narrowing down feels like shrinking, but it’s really sharpening, and it makes you the obvious choice for the people worth having.
If the right people aren’t recognising you, our free guide, The Cost of Not Being Recognised, breaks down what that quietly costs you and how to become the name the right clients remember.
And if you want an outside read on who your brand is really speaking to, our Strategic Brand Review shows you where to sharpen it so the right clients recognise themselves and reach out.
